Jews were not allowed to settle in towns in Hungary before 1840. After this however, not only were they allowed to settle, but also to purchase property. In 1841, the Jews of Pécs bought a piece of land in what is today Citrom Street in order to build a synagogue. The temple was inaugurated in 1843 and used until 1868/69 when the new synagogue was built. The former synagogue was demolished – only the plot the remained.
