Food package label

In the immediate post-war years, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee disbursed relief to some two thirds of Hungarian Holocaust survivors. They maintained soup kitchens, supported the reorganization and operation of Jewish institutions, provided long-term, low interest loans to assist returning people reestablish themselves, contributed to the rebuilding of synagogues and schools. The Hungarian Communist authorities banned the organization in Hungary following a show trial against its leaders in 1953. The Hebrew and Yiddish language label shows that the food package it came along with was the gift from the American Jewish Community. The two bottom lines show the full designation of the organization in Hebrew letters. In Latin transcription it reads like “A matana fun amerikaner jiden durkh di ameriken dzhuish dzhoint distribushon komite”.
